02-12-09 MAN JAILED 30 YEARS FOR POSSESSING ILLEGAL ARM IN BAWKU Narration: Yakubu Mohammed Sadat, 27, in the early hours of today had been sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for possessing a locally manufactured revolver pistol at Zongo a suburb of Bawku in the Upper East Region. The proceeding which took place at the Bolgatanga Circuit court was presided over by the Regional circuit Court Judge, Justice William Boampong. Yakubu Mohammed Sadat who is a Civil Servant working under the National Youth Employment Progamme (NYEP) was arrested by the Bawku Police last Tuesday. According to Detective Lance Corporal Iddi Abu who made the arrest said at the about 4.pm on the said day, he had a tip off that the accused was illegally possessing a locally manufactured gun which according to him is contrary to the section 192 (1) as substituted by NLCD 398 code. With this arrangement, basket weavers in the region can also live dignified and fulfilling lives with proceeds from their baskets. Basket buyers on the international market, especially in Denmark, mostly prefer Upper East Baskets, popularly referred to as Bolga Baskets for reasons best known to them. On the local market, Upper East baskets still stand tall and yet the livelihoods of the people who make these baskets cannot be said to have improved. A standard shopping basket that meets both markets' requirements is sold on the local market at GH¢5 while on the international market the same basket goes for a fair trade price of not less than $50, which is indeed...

04-12-09 REGIONAL FARMERS DAY ENDS IN NAVRONGO The Cos Park was the venue for this year’s 25th Regional and District best farmers day celebration held at Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana District of the Upper East Region with a call on farmers to adapt to new ways of farming through the application of science and technology. The Regional Director of Agric, Alhaji Abdul Razak Zibrim, who made the call in a speech, commended all gallant and hardworking farmers in the country for their contribution to food security and economic transformation of the region and the country as a whole.
