FLOOD VICTIMS SLEEPS INFRONT OF STORES AND BUS TERMINALS.
Reports reaching the Super morning Show this morning is that flood waters from the spillage of the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso have submerged farms and may delay rehabitation plans of evacuated residents as further rains are expected in the areas.

Joseph Osei, Joy FM’s correspondent in Upper West Region of Ghana told the SMS that many farms have been submerged in the floods ensuing from the Bagre dam spillage. He said that it appears that this year’s spillage has been better managed as evacuations have been better done and villages along the Black Volta and White Volta rivers especially in the Upper West regions. He said that some villages along the banks of some rivers which take their source from the

He said that he saw many of the migrants sleeping in the open; in front of kiosks and bus terminals Boligatanga, adding that they complained about not been given accommodation after being evacuated from their villages.

Speaking to the SMS, Mr. Patrick Akake, Upper West district NADMO Cordinator said that the weather has not been friendly today and it is expected that further rains may be recorded. He said that his coordinators in Bawku and the surrounding areas have told him that it was about to rain in their areas and that the rains are likely to collect in the rivers and further aggravate the flooding situation. He denied claims by Joseph that some farms had been submerged in floods and that affected people were sleeping in the open in Tamale.

Mr. Akake said that NADMO does not give accommodation to displaced people and to think of a population of over 3,000 people, it was not practical for NADMO as of now to accommodate all of them. He wondered whether the displaced people did not have relatives and questioned why they had not made plans for alternative accommodation in spite of the advance warning that was given months ahead of the evacuation. Mr. Akake admitted that he has not been on a tour of the flooded areas this morning.

Joseph Osei insisted that flood victims from the Talensi Nabdam district and other affected areas were still sleeping in the open in Boligatanga and that he was willing to take the regional coordinator on a tour of those areas to ascertain the situation – including the flooded farms which he claims did not exist.

Mr. Patrick Akake in his closing remarks said that NADMO merely a mitigates in disaster affairs and does not have the financial muscle to offer accommodation or reimburse disaster victims for their property losses.
