LEAP in eleven months arrears

By Joseph Osei
The Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) Program is said to be in arrears. Eleven districts that benefits from the program in the Ashanti Region have not receive grants for the past nine months.  The program is a social cash transfer program which provides cash and health insurance to extremely poor households across Ghana. LEAP started a trial phase in March 2008, now reaches approximately 35,000 households across Ghana. The program is fully funded from general revenues of the Government of Ghana, and is the flagship program of its National Social Protection Strategy.
Speaking to Ultimate Radio, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Social welfare Jacob Achulo said the program since January has not paid grants to beneficiaries. He said beneficiaries have been trooping to their district offices to inquire when the monies will be paid.
